This Amsterdam team built up experience of solar boats in Zeeland in 2009. They entered a catamaran in the 2009 Zeeland race, but their tactics have changed and the team is entering a monohull in the Frisian Solar Challenge. A lot of time has therefore been put into the construction of their boat. ‘That is why we have chosen to put PR for our team on the back burner,’ says Marijn Feis. Estimating their chances is another area on which they have not concentrated. ‘The changes to the boat are so great, all we can do is see what’s what. Of course we are looking for a podium position.’

This team from Zwolle is taking a professional approach. There are four core team members who have prioritised the Frisian Solar Challenge alongside their full-time jobs. Despite this serious approach, they think it is more important to take part than to win. ‘But we are not ruling out a top 3 place in the B class,’ says Ruben van der Kaaden. He himself already has two races under his belt in another team. In addition to the four core team members, another four team members are dealing with the logistics.

B58. Drenthe College, Emmen, The Netherlands

The Drenthe College was unlucky in 2008 because they were disqualified on the very last inspection day. So this year they at least want to make it to the starting line. ‘We have a monohull with two hydrofoils with two floats underneath. We have modified the 2008 design a bit so we are assuming we will get through the qualifications safely,’ says Sebastiaan van Bodegom. The team is positive about this year’s result and now expects at least to come in the top three.
